What Is Truth?

Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no fault in Him at all. – John 18:37-38 (NKJV)

Pilate asked, “What is truth?”

The term “truth” refers to the quality or state of being in accordance with fact or reality. It is the correspondence between a statement, belief, or proposition and the actual state of affairs. In other words, truth is the accurate representation or description of the way things are.

Truth can be understood in different contexts. In objective or scientific contexts, truth is often associated with verifiable evidence, empirical data, and logical reasoning. It is the result of rigorous investigation and the consensus of experts in a particular field.

Subjective truth, on the other hand, pertains to personal beliefs, perspectives, and experiences. It is a truth that is valid and meaningful to an individual or a group, even though it may not be universally applicable or verifiable.

It is important to note that truth can sometimes be elusive or difficult to ascertain due to various factors such as cognitive biases, limited information, or the complexity of certain phenomena. However, the pursuit of truth remains a fundamental aspect of human inquiry and the quest for knowledge.

Truth is of utmost importance in our lives, as it serves as a fundamental pillar for human understanding, communication, and progress. It is the bedrock upon which knowledge, trust, and meaningful relationships are built.

It provides us with accurate and reliable information, allowing us to make informed decisions and navigate through life with clarity. Secondly, truth is vital for effective communication. When we communicate honestly and truthfully, we foster trust and credibility in our relationships. Truthful communication strengthens bonds and cultivates empathy, as it allows individuals to share their authentic thoughts, emotions, and experiences. On the other hand, a lack of truth can erode trust, sow seeds of doubt, and hinder meaningful connections.

Furthermore, truth plays a crucial role for a healthy society. It serves as the foundation for scientific advancements, as scientists rely on truth-seeking methodologies to uncover new knowledge and expand the boundaries of human understanding. In the realm of justice, truth is essential for fair judgments and the maintenance of a just society. Without truth, our legal systems will falter, and injustice will prevail.

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.“ They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever.” – John 8:31-35 (NKJV)

If you REALLY want to know the truth, invite Jesus Christ into your life. Ask Him to forgive you of all your sins, which He is very willing and wants to do, and ask Him to show you who He really is. You can verify what God shows you by knowing His Word, The Holy Bible. I know this to be true because that is precisely what I did in 1982. God sent someone who knew God’s Truth, the Word of God, and He showed me the Way. I am still learning and growing in that Truth through my personal relationship with Jesus. It has brought much peace, happiness, and joy into my life! If you do not yet have that, I pray you find it today by asking God to show you who He really is. I have faith for this to work because Jesus rose from the dead! He’s alive! And He is more than able to reveal Himself to those who REALLY want to know the Truth!
